MARIETTA, Ohio – Ohio Northern University scored four second-half goals to blow open a close match and defeat Marietta College 6-1 Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Polar Bears improve to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Marietta drops to 3-10-1 and 0-4-1 in the OAC.
Marietta took the early lead with a goal in the 12th minute when junior forward Wes Riley tallied his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Senior
Lucas Eick (Hartville/Marlington) fed the ball to Riley inside the 18-yard box. Riley placed the ball into the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Ohio Northern's freshman forward Matt Kinkopf got the equalizer in the 37th minute with an assist from Dustin Lorenzo. Kinkopf added another goal in the second half giving him 12 on the season.
Marietta was whistled for a foul giving ONU a direct kick 25 yards from the Pioneer goal. Senior Jeremy Barnes took the direct kick and fired a shot just inside the far post for the game winner.
The Polar Bears capitalized on a one-man advantage in the second half as Marietta had a player sent off in the 58th minute. Ohio Northern got goals in the second half from Keegan Ross, Kinkopf, David Janusz and Brock Hersch.
Senior
Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta) started in goal for Marietta and made seven saves. Fellow senior Joe Unger made his first appearance of the season and played the final eight minutes in goal.
Freshman Evan Bader had three saves in goal for the Polar Bears in 75 minutes of action. Classmate Trent Rantala played 15 minytes without making a save.
For the match, Ohio Northern took 21 shots to just four for the Pioneers. The Polar Bears held a decisive 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.
