ADA, Ohio – Ohio Northern University defeated Marietta College 3-1 Friday (Oct. 18) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball. The Polar Bears posted set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-12.
Marietta falls to 11-14 overall and 1-4 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 15-7 on the season and 4-1 in the OAC.
The Pioneers took an early 14-11 lead in the first set, but Ohio Northern won nine points in a row to take a 20-14 lead. Marietta got within two points, 23-21, before the Polar Bears secured the set. 25-22.
The second set was all ONU as the Polar Bears never trailed en route to the 25-19 win.
Marietta came from behind to take the third set. ONU jumped out to a 16-10 lead only to see Marietta battle back to tie the set, 16-16. The Pioneers won the final three points to take the set, 25-23.
In the fourth set, ONU won the first four points and built an early 8-4 lead. The Polar Bears finished off the match with a 9-1 run.
Junior
Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights) led the Pioneers with nine kills. Sophomores
Keri Horton (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) and
Chloe Janson (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) each had eight kills. Junior setter
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North) had a match-high 34 assists.
Defensively, Janson recorded five blocks and Hackenberg and Horton had three each. Sophomore libero
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) had 22 digs and senior
Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) added 20.
