Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior
J.J. Martin (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) led four Pioneers in double figures as Marietta College easily defeated Muskingum University 98-67 Wednesday (Jan, 30) evening in men's basketball action. Martin finished with 21 points and nine rebounds as Marietta improved to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Muskingum (1-19 overall, 0-13 OAC) hung with the Pioneers for most of the first half. Junior Dave Brown hit a three-pointer with 6:42 left in the opening period to cut the Marietta lead to three, 24-21.
The Pioneers, who never trailed in the game, closed the first half on a 21-8 run to lead by 16, 45-29, at the break.
Marietta quickly pushed the lead over 20 points in the second half and Muskingum could get no closer than 18 points. The Pioneer lead ballooned to as many as 33 points, 84-51, with 8:03 left in the game.
Marietta received great play from its bench. Senior
Tyler Worstell (Prospect/Franklin Heights) scored 10 points and dished out seven assists. Junior
Matt Napier (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had 11 points, four rebounds and blocked two shots, while sophomore
Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) added 11 points.
Brow led the Fighting Muskies with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting , including 3-of-4 behind the arc. Sophomore Michael Klamo chipped in with 15 points and a team-high five rebounds. Freshman Christian Keller added 10 points.
Marietta shot 57.8% (37-of-64) from the floor, 38.9% (7-of-18) from three-point range and 81.0% (17-of-21) at the line. Muskingum hit 26-of-61 (42.6%) from the floor, 3-of-9 (33.3%) behind the arc and 12-of-14 (85.7%) at the line.
The Pioneers dominated the glass with a 41-27 edge in rebounds. Both teams took good care of the basketball. Marietta committed seven turnovers and Muskingum had eight.
Marietta hosts Heidelberg University on Saturday (Feb. 2) at 3:00 p.m. in the second half of the Winter Weekend doubleheader. The Pioneer women host Heidelberg at 1:00 p.m. Fans can catch the action live at
