Otterbein upsets Men's Basketball 72-62 in Westerville

Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University hit 10 three-pointers to upset first place Marietta College 72-62 Wednesday (Jan. 23) evening. The loss drops the Pioneers into a tie with Capital at the top of the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 9-2 record. Marietta is 13-5 overall.

Otterbein (7-11 overall, 4-7 OAC) earned a split in the season series with the Pioneers on the strength of freshman Jake Bischoff's career-high 26 points. Bischoff was 9-of-13 from the floor including 5-of-6 from three-point territory.

Despite a cold night of shooting that included a 4-of-25 performance from three-point range, the Pioneers battled back from a 13-point deficit. Marietta trailed by three, 65-62, after a Garrett Stephenson (West Milton/Milton-Union) tip-in with 48 seconds left in the game.

The Pioneers were forced to foul down the stretch and Otterbein hit 7-of-8 free throw attempts in the final 39 seconds to secure the victory.

Senior J.J. Martin (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) led Marietta with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Stephenson and junior Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) each added 10 points.

Colin Echelberry scored 11 points and Zach Bakenhaster chipped in with 10 for the Cardinals. Max Van Meter pulled down eight rebounds, while Bakenhaster grabbed seven. Andy Yazrombek had a game-high eight assists to go along with nine points.

For the game, Marietta shot 35.8% (24-of-67) from the floor, 16.0% (4-of-25) behind the arc and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the line. Otterbein hit 24-of-50 (48.0%) from the floor, 10-of-19 (52.6%) from long distance and 14-of-17 (82.4%) at the charity stripe.

Otterbein pulled down 38 rebounds to 35 for Marietta. The Pioneers forced 20 Cardinal turnovers, while committing 13.
