Baseball loses two at Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The top-ranked Marietta College Pioneers dropped a pair of games Thursday (March 15) afternoon at the Snowbird Classic. The Pioneers lost to Montclair State (N.J.) 4-0 in the first game and to Wooster 6-0 in the second. [Montclair Box Score] [Wooster Box Score]

Marietta is now 7-3 on the season. Montclair improved to 4-5 overall, while Wooster is now 2-2.

Montclair State senior lefty Sean Hille (1-1) kept the Pioneer hitters off balance the entire game. Hille pitched the complete game shutout allowing just three hits. He walked five and struck out nine.

Playing with several regular starters out of the lineup, Marietta surrendered three unearned runs in the second inning. That was all the Red Hawks would need.

Matt Moreno led off the bottom of the second with an infield single. The second hitter grounded to third but the Pioneers dropped the ball trying to get the lead runner at second base.

Jason Chesterma bunted the runners over and was safe at first when the throw got away. On the error, Moreno came around to score. Following a strikeout, Juan Perdomo singled through the left side of the infield driving in Scott Glozzy. Chesterma later scored on a passed ball giving Montclair State the 3-0 lead.

The Red Hawks added an insurance run in the fifth.

The Pioneers' scoring opportunities were limited. Twice Montclair State turned double plays to head off a Marietta rally. #Chris Winpigler (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora)# had a pinch-hit double, the only extra base hit of the game for either team. #Zach Bukiewicz (Minford/Lucasville Valley)# and #Christian Demko (Xenia/Bellbrook)# had Marietta's other hits.

#Luke Langdon (Troy/Troy)# (0-1) started and went 6.0 innings. He allowed four runs, one earned, on eight hits. Langdon walked two and struck out four. #Mackenzie Koehler (Adena/St. Clairsville)# threw the last 2.0 innings and retired all six hitters he faced, including one strike out.

Wooster's designated hitter Billy Farrow unleashed a two-run home run over the leftfield fence to put the Fighting Scots up 2-0. Wooster added four in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.

Steve Hagen (1-0) pitched 8.0 strong innings to earn the win. He allowed no runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout. Kyle Cunningham threw the ninth and walked one Pioneer hitter.

Senior #Brian Gasser (New Philadelphia/Indian Valley)# (2-1) took the loss. Gasser pitched 8.0 innings and gave up two runs, both earned, on four hits. He walked one and struck out a dozen. #Evan Brockmeier# threw the ninth. Brockmeier allowed four runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Winpigler went 2-for-4 and #Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont)# had a double.

The Pioneers now head back to Demorest, Ga. for two games against nationally ranked opponents. Marietta plays No. 6 Rowan (N.J.) at 7 p.m. tomorrow (March 16) and No. 7 Piedmont at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
