Men's Basketball win streak halted at five by Ohio Northern

Box Score ADA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak get snapped on Saturday (Feb. 4) at the hands of Ohio Northern, 70-63. The loss drops Marietta's record to 14-7 overall and 10-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Northern improves to 10-11 overall and 6-8 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Senior post Kevin Knab (Lakewood/Lakewood) recorded game-highs with 22 points and 12 rebounds on the day. Sophomore guard Tyler Hammond (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) scored 12 points with two assists for the Pioneers. Junior post #J.J. Martin# added nine points with nine boards in the loss.

Ohio Northern was led by Scott Schnelle with 18 points and five boards. Branden Rushton scored 15 points with a game-high five assists. Jared Horstman chipped in with 11 points and seven boards while Dominique Royal added 10 points in the win.

Both teams traded leads in the early minutes of the game with Marietta gaining its biggest lead of the day at 5-2 with 15:49 left in the first half. Ohio Northern led by seven on a few different occasions in the opening half and went into the locker room leading 34-27.

Having trailed at the half in all but one of its five-straight wins, Marietta is no stranger to playing from behind coming out of halftime. The Polar Bear lead quickly vanished just six minutes into the half as Knab converted a layup to tie the score at 40-40. The Polar Bears pushed the lead back to seven, 49-42, with 10:25 left in the second half.

Marietta chipped away at the deficit and finally regained the lead off a Trevor Halter (Malvern/Malvern) jumper at 56-55 with 3:22 to play. Northern answered on its next possession, but Halter was there with another shot in the lane giving Marietta the lead 58-57 with 2:51 to play.

Schnelle answered with two free throws, which gave Ohio Northern the lead for good down the stretch as it held the Pioneers at bay. The Polar Bears made their free throws in the final two minutes and went on to win, 70-63.

Marietta shot 46.6% (27-of-58) from the field, converted a season-low 6.3% (1-of-16) from behind the arc and 61.5% (8-of-13) from the free throw line.

Ohio Northern finished the game shooting 44.2% (23-of-52) from the field, 21.1% (4-of-19) from three-point range and 76.9% (20-of-26) from the free throw line.

Marietta held the edge in rebounding 34-30 but committed 15 turnovers to Ohio Northern's 12. The Pioneers dominated the paint 42-24, but were called for 25 fouls to 17 for Ohio Northern.

Marietta will stay on the road as it will play Mount Union next on Wednesday (Feb. 8) night at 7:30 p.m.
