GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Marietta College volleyball team lost a non-conference match at Thiel College by the score of 3-0 Friday (Oct. 5) evening. The Tomcats posted set scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17. Marietta drops to 13-6 on the season, while Thiel moves to 13-5 overall.
The Tomcats rode the arm of senior middle hitter Kelly Barzak all night. Barzak posted a match-high 10 kills and four blocks. She committed just one attack error in 18 attempts for an impressive .500 attack percentage.
Marietta's attack struggled as the Pioneers had 30 kills and 28 errors in the match. The Pioneers had a negative attacking percentage in the first and third sets.
Outside hitter #
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green)# recorded eight kills to lead the Pioneers. Middle blocker #Kathryn Hanssen# and outside hitter #
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty)# had six and five kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter #
Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North)# dished out 24 assists. The Marietta back line was anchored by defensive specialist #
Mary Ervin (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange)# with 14 digs. Libero #
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston)# had 13 digs and Mauer added 10.
