WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University defeated Marietta College by the score of 2-0 Tuesday (Oct. 23) afternoon to capture the Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer regular season championship. The Cardinals improve to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the OAC, while the Pioneers move to 3-12-1 on the season and 1-6-1 in league play.
The two teams batted to a scoreless halftime tie. Otterbein dominated play during the first 45 minutes outshooting Marietta 10-2. The Cardinals had numerous scoring opportunities taking 13 corner kicks in the opening period.
The Cardinals finally got on the board scoring off a corner in the 50th minute. Molly Newhouse received the corner kick at the top of the 18-yard box and fired the shot past Marietta keeper #
Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange)# for the game-winner.
Otterbein added an insurance goal in the 61st minute. Jillian Strimbu controlled the ball on the end line and centered the ball to Jessica Yaney in the middle of the box. Yaney slipped the ball into the net for a 2-0 Cardinal lead.
Pearse had seven saves in goal for the Pioneers. Otterbein goalkeeper Dana Strimbu recorded one save in the match.
Otterbein took 19 shots, to just three for Marietta. The Cardinals held a commanding 19-1 edge in corners.
