Women's Soccer drops 4-0 decision to Capital University

MARIETTA, Ohio – Capital University defeated Marietta College by the score of 4-0 Wednesday (Oct. 17) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Crusaders improve to 9-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the OAC. The Pioneers fall to 3-10-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in league play.

Capital's Natalie Fiorelli scored the game-winner just 3:08 into the match. Dani Irwin sent a cross into the top of the six-yard box where Fiorelli collected it and shot the ball inside the left post for the goal.

The Pioneers thought they had tied the game in the 14th minute. #Melina Feitl (Broadview Heights/Holy Name)# fired a shot that Capital keeper Maggie Donnellan barely got a hand on. The ball deflected off the cross bar and appeared to cross the line for a goal before Donnellan could control the ball. However, the linesman called it a save.

The Crusaders extended their lead in the 19th minute. Corey McClellan's point-blank shot was saved by Marietta keeper #Kaitlin Pearse#, but Kate Connell quickly tapped the deflection into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Jessie Cermelj scored with an assist from Allison Mervau at the 39:32 mark to give Capital a 3-0 advantage at halftime. Cermelj picked up an assist in the second half on a goal by Rachael Wintering with less than a minute left in the match.

Capital took 24 shots in the match and held Marietta to three. The Crusaders also held a large 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Pearse recorded seven saves in goal for the Pioneers. Donnellan had two saves for Capital.
