Muskingum escapes with double overtime win over Men's Soccer

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Muskingum University scored five minutes into the second overtime period to defeat Marietta College 2-1 Wednesday (Oct. 10) in men' soccer. The Fighting Muskies improve to 5-6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 4-8 on the season and 1-3 in the OAC.

The Muskies grabbed the lead in the 19th minute of the first half. Brett Hanna sent a corner kick into the box where Pat Normansell headed the ball in for his first goal of the season. Muskingum took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Marietta came out in the second period and dominated play. The Pioneers took 15 shots in the second half to just eight for the Muskies. Sophomore #Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta)# tallied the equalizer in the 56th minute. Riley's header off a cross from junior #Miles Alexander (Bellbrook/Bellbrook)# knotted the match at 1-1.

The Pioneers stayed on the attack but Muskingum goalkeeper Hunter Huffman kept Marietta from scoring the game-winner. Huffman had five saves in the second half and ended the day with seven total stops.

Neither team scored in the first 10-minute overtime period. Muskingum turned up the heat in the second extra period firing off four shots in the first few minutes. Daniel Meehan launched a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that got past Marietta keeper #Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta)# for the game-winner in the 105th minute.

Marietta outshot Muskingum 24-17 in the match. The Pioneers took five corner kicks to the Muskies' four.

Stollar made four saves in goal for Marietta.
