Bethany (W.Va.), the only school that Marietta (4-1) did not play over the two-day tournament, was crowned the champion on a tie-breaker after both the Bison and Pioneers finished 4-0. It was the second straight year that Marietta won all four matches at its home tournament.

Following the action, junior outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player and sophomore libero Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) was selected as the Libero of the Tournament.

Head Coach Ray Costa had an opportunity to rest its two top offensive weapons--Weissling and junior right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls)--and gauge its depth in the first match against LaGrange. Freshman middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen paced the team with eight kills, while junior outside hitter Elizabeth Robbe (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) added five kills and sophomore setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg/Walsh Jesuit) had 21 assists in the three-set victory.

Braun, who added to the offense with seven service aces, led the defense with 11 digs. Jenkins followed closely with 10 digs, while Robber had eight digs. Hanssen had a team-best two blocks in the win.

Weissling and Storey returned to action in the match against Penn State-Behrend and combined with sophomore outside hitter Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) to compile 32 of the team's 42 kills. Storey led the way with 13 kills, VanGundy pitched in with a career-best 11 kills and Weissling add eight kills. Jenkins collected 34 assists in the five-set victory.

Braun once again spearheaded the defensive effort of the back line with 30 digs. Weissling added 12 digs and Jenkins finished with 10 digs, while Hanssen had two total blocks in the win.

Marietta is back in action Tuesday (Sept. 7) night when it visits North Canton, Ohio, for a non-conference match with Walsh University at 7 p.m.
