Ray Costa, a native of Long Island, New York, begins his eighth season as Marietta College’s head volleyball coach in 2014 following a 12-18 2013 season.
Costa, the 10th volleyball coach in the program’s history, has accumulated an 98-110 record during his time with the Pioneers. Under his guidance, Marietta has shown steady improvement on the court. Costa has led the Pioneers to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in four of the last five seasons, including a 17-12 overall record in 2012.
The 2012 season proved to be highly successful for Costa, as the Pioneers earned the right to host an OAC tournament game for the first time in 27 years. Marietta traveled to Tiffin and swept No. 23 Heidelberg 3-0 earlier in the season.
Costa led the squad to a 12-15 record and a trip to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in his first season with the Pioneers in 2008. In his second year, the Pioneers went 16-17.
Before coming to Marietta, Costa spent three seasons as the full-time assistant coach with Washington & Lee, located in Lexington, Virginia.
While with Washington & Lee, the Generals posted an 89-21 record. In 2006, the squad went 28-9, was undefeated in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Costa graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education—specializing in Mathematics—from York College of Pennsylvania in 2004. He earned a master's degree in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011.
Costa served as the head coach for the Rockbridge County Juniors from 2005-07 and worked at a variety of volleyball camps over the past few summers.
During his time at York, Costa played four years of club volleyball and was the manager of the women’s varsity team as a junior and senior. He acted as the club team president for three years, managing financial matters, organizing travel arrangements, scheduling practices and matches and serving as the team’s representative. Costa was a player-coach as a sophomore and senior and the head coach during his junior year. In 2004, the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) ranked the club team No. 25 in Division II.
Costa, who is also the department’s marketing and promotions director, lives in Marietta with his wife Amanda and son Evan.
