Bethany Tops Men's Soccer 4-3

MARIETTA, Ohio — A Bethany College hat trick doomed the Marietta College men's soccer team in a 4-3 loss Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon at Marietta Field. [Box Score]

The Bison (2-4) out shot the Pioneers (0-2-2) 20-13 overall, including a 12-5 in the second half. Bethany finished with 13 shots on goal compared to nine shots on goal for Marietta.

Bethany took a 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute when Arkangelo James beat a defender and then fired a shot past the keeper and inside the near post.

Marietta quickly answered when a foul in the box produced a penalty kick just 67 seconds later. Junior midfielder Dustin Zimmerman (Hebron/Granville Christian Academy) calmly sent a shot past the keeper for his first goal of the season.

The Pioneers took their first lead in the 40th minute. Sophomore defender Andrew Dufford (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) sent a ball to freshman forward Keith Schwendeman (Lowell/Marietta). Schwendeman beat a charging keeper with a shot under his arms and into the back of the net to give his squad a 2-1 lead. The goal was his second of the season.

Bethany tied the game in the 51st minute when Cameron Ward converted a penalty kick after Marietta committed a foul of its own in the box.

The Bison regained an advantage with James' second goal of the game in the 61st minute. This time, he received the ball breaking toward the goal and slid a shot past the keeper and inside the far post.

The Pioneers responded 31 seconds later when freshman midfielder Mile Alexander (Bellbrook/Bellbrook) crossed a ball to the top of the penalty box. Sophomore Brandon Siringer (Willowick/Eastlake North) received the pass and laced a shot that deflected off the keeper and into the back of the net to tie the match at 3-3. The goal gave Siringer two on the year.

James' goal in the 86th minute, however, gave him the hat trick and proved to be the game-winner. A Pioneer turnover and a quick pass from Sebastian Martinez led to another breakaway for James. He carried the ball into the box and beat the keeper with a shot to the far post.

Marietta will look to bounce back when it plays host to Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday (Sept. 15) in a match-up at Marietta Field that begins at 4:30 p.m.
