Yellow Jackets Top Pioneer Football 39-9

BEREA, Ohio — Marietta College football suffered its third straight defeat against Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) competition with a 39-9 loss at Baldwin-Wallace College Saturday (Oct. 2) afternoon. The Yellow Jackets remained undefeated at 4-0 and moved to 3-0 in league play. The Pioneers fell to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Marietta, who had 10 first downs and the ball for 26:27, finished with just 22 yards rushing and 167 yards passing in the loss. Baldwin-Wallace collected 20 first downs and finished with 148 yards on the ground and 223 yards through the air.

Sophomore #Tevin Dones (Antioch, Calif./Antioch)# had 18 carries for 54 yards to lead Marietta's ground attack, while Andrew Dziak paced Baldwin-Wallace with 10 carries for 71 yards and one touchdown.

Junior #Andrew Keller (Cincinnati/Glen Este)# completed 13-of-21 passes and threw for 145 yards and a score before getting knocked out of the game in the third quarter. Junior backup #Kyle Shackle (Butler/Mount Vernon)# finished the game and went 1-of-5 for zero yards. Both Pioneer quarterbacks threw a pair of interceptions. Baldwin-Wallace's Ryan O'Rourke went 20-of-29 and passed for 223 yards and one touchdown.

Junior #Jahmaal Jones (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale)# caught a game-high seven balls for 95 yards to lead the Pioneers' receivers. Aaron Hurd and Josiah Holt both had six receptions for the Yellow Jackets.

Sophomore linebacker #Kadeem Corbin (Cheltenham, Md./Fredrick Douglas)# paced Marietta with 12 total stops, including the Pioneers' only sack. Sophomore strong safety #Rahkeem Caver (Hamilton/Hamilton)# and junior linebacker #Dan Starr (Senecaville/Buckeye Trail)# both added double-digit tackles, finishing with 11 and 10 hits, respectively. Ryan Kish matched Corbin with a team-high 12 tackles for Baldwin-Wallace.

The Yellow Jackets took control of the game's opening drive when Dziak scored on an 11-yard touchdown run. Marietta scored its first points of the game on its second possession. Junior #Kyle Carwell# capped an eight-play drive with a career-best 46 yard field goal.

The Yellow Jackets carried a 7-3 advantage into the second quarter and added to the lead when a bad snap on a Pioneer punt led to a safety with 10:36 to play in the half. Baldwin-Wallace then made the most of good field position on the ensuing possession, and O'Rourke punched it in from one yard to give his squad a 16-3 lead, which it took into intermission.

Marietta opened the second half with another eight-play scoring drive. Keller found sophomore wide receiver #Kirby Harris (Greenville, S.C./South Side)# open for a nine yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to seven points after the extra point attempt failed. Baldwin-Wallace added a 28 yard field goal midway through the period to stretch its lead to 19-9 as the teams headed into the final quarter.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the final 15 minutes. O'Rourke threw a 25 yard touchdown pass to John McGraw with 10:41 remaining. Matt Bowen then intercepted a Shackle pass on Marietta's first play from scrimmage on its next possession and returned it 24 yards for another touchdown. Kyrell Crook completed the scoring later in the frame with a six yard touchdown run to give Baldwin-Wallace the 39-9 win.

The Pioneers will return to action Saturday (Oct. 9) afternoon when #2 University of Mount Union (4-0, 3-0 OAC) visits Don Drumm Stadium for "Take a Kid to the Game Day" at 1:30 p.m. A child under 14 years of age will receive free admission when accompanied by a paying adult.
