Halter’s career-high 29 points lifts Marietta past Muskingum 73-69

MARIETTA, Ohio — Trevor Halter (Malvern, Malvern) scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Marietta College men's basketball team to a key Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win over rival Muskingum University 73-69 Wednesday (Jan. 6) night at Ban Johnson Arena. The sophomore guard scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half while also recording a game-high 10 rebounds in the Pioneers' victory. The win improved Marietta's record to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the OAC. Muskingum fell to 5-8 overall and 0-6 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Sophomore forward Zane Carter (Wellsville, Wellsville) was the only other Pioneer to score in double figures. He had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Freshman J.J. Martin (Huntington, W.Va., Huntington) also came off the bench to score 9 points, canning 3-of-5 shots from behind the arc.

Muskingum was led by Nick Hershberger with 20 points. Guard Carson Thomas scored 18 points, while Cory Bourquin added 10 in the loss.

The Pioneers finished the game shooting 28-of-65 (43.1%) from the field, 6-of-16 (37.5%) from behind the arc and 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the free throw line. Muskingum shot 27-of-56 (48.2%) from the field, 7-of-17 (41.2%) from three and 8-of-10 (80%) from the free throw line. The Pioneers out rebounded the Muskies 37-34 and committed only 12 turnovers to Muskingum's 19. The Pioneers' bench outscored the Muskie's bench 33-6.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Jan. 9) afternoon at Ohio Northern University. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
