MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2009 Marietta Soccer Classic championship game came down to a shootout as Marietta College and Maryville (Tenn.) College battled to a 1-1 tie Sunday (Sept. 6) afternoon. The Scots won the shootout 3-1 to claim the title. [

Maryville (2-0-1) out shot Marietta (1-1-1) 26-8 overall, including 15-2 in shots on goal.
The Scots broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 27th minute. Tom Webster fired off three straight shots from just outside six yards. The first was saved by Marietta's keeper, the second was saved by a Marietta defender, but the third finally found the back of the net.
The Pioneers evened the score in the 71st minute. A Scot foul set up a free kick from 30 yards out. Senior defender Delè Adedapo (Gahanna, Bexley) sent the free kick into the box and found senior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg, Twinsburg), who headed the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer and his third goal of the tournament.
Maryville goalkeeper Chris Penn, who made just two saves during the game but three in the shootout, was named the Tournament MVP. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Webster, Jack Sowell, and Ben Lawson. Marietta's All-Tournament Team selections were Adedapo, Muth, senior Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va., Parkersburg) and sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Shannon (Cincinnati, Mariemont), who collected 13 saves in the championship game.
In the consolation game, St. Vincent defeated Bluffton 4-2. Luis Rodriguez and Dean Jordan were St. Vincent's All-Tournament Team picks, while Brian Good represented Bluffton.
Marietta is back in action on Friday (Sept. 11) evening when the Pioneers play host to Thomas More (Ky.) at 5 p.m.
