Marietta football travels to Berea for week four showdown with Baldwin-Wallace

Senior Lamar Hunter and the Pioneers look to improve to 3-0 on Saturday
MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2009 Marietta College football season continues Saturday (Sept. 26) night when the Pioneers have their first road test of the season at Baldwin-Wallace College. Kickoff with the Yellow Jackets is slated for 6:30 p.m. at George Finnie Stadium. [Game Notes (PDF)]

Here is a look at both teams:

Baldwin-Wallace College: Led by eighth-year Head Coach John Snell, the Baldwin-Wallace College football team enters the game in search of its first win in 2009. Baldwin-Wallace ranks fifth in the OAC in scoring, averaging 30.0 points. The Yellow Jackets rank third in total offense (423.5). They are second in passing (271.5) and fifth in rushing (152.0). Baldwin-Wallace is the fourth-most penalized team in the OAC, giving up an average of 73.5 penalty yards in 2009. The Yellow Jackets have converted 9-of-10 red-zone chances (7 touchdowns) and 15-of-30 third down opportunities this season. Baldwin-Wallace is controlling the clock for 29:25 while on defense for 29:35. The Yellow Jackets have collected 47 first downs, while its defense has also allowed 47.

Senior Anthony Gardner has completed 44-of-69 passes and thrown for 543 yards with 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Junior Kyrell Cook is the team's leading rusher, having run for 112 yards and 3 scores on 38 carries. Junior John McGraw has caught a team-high 9 passes for 68 yards.

The Yellow Jackets defense is allowing 40.5 points per game, which ranks 10th in the OAC. Baldwin-Wallace has surrendered 70.0 yards on the ground and 285.0 yards through the air, which rank third and ninth, respectively, in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets, who have a -7 turnover margin, have compiled 3 sacks and 9 tackles for loss this season. They have allowed their opponents to convert 11-of-12 red zone chances (10 touchdowns). Opponents have converted 9-of-26 third-down opportunities against Baldwin-Wallace.

Sophomore Brett Thompson leads the squad in total tackles with 18, including 2.5 tackles for loss. Junior Ryan Kish and senior Pete Taylor are right behind him with 17 and 16 stops, respectively.

Junior Scott Nealon has averaged 38.4 yards on 5 punts, while junior Brian Pollock is 2-for-2 in field goals and 6-for-7 in extra points in 2009. Baldwin-Wallace, led by Taylor and sophomore Tim Miker, is averaging 23.2 yards on kickoff returns and 14.3 yards on punt returns.

Marietta College: Head Coach Jeff Filkovski's Marietta College football team is looking to start the year 3-0 for the first time since 1989. Marietta is averaging 22.0 points and 315.5 yards this season, which both rank seventh in the OAC. Of those yards, 138.0 come on the ground and 177.5 are through the air. The Pioneers are ranked sixth in rushing offense and seventh in passing offense. Marietta has converted 5-of-17 third down and 7-of-7 red-zone chances (6 touchdowns). The Pioneers enter with a -3 turnover margin. Marietta trails its opponents in time of possession, holding onto the ball for an average of 27:33, while on defense for 32:26. The Pioneers are the third most penalized team in the OAC, giving up an average of 74.5 yards.

Individually, sophomore quarterback Andrew Keller (Cincinnati, Glen Este) is 28-of-39 passing, throwing for 355 yards. He has thrown 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in two games. Senior Lamar Hunter (South Euclid, Brush) leads the ground attack with and OAC-best 54 rushes for 247 yards. Hunter has rushed for 2 touchdowns this season. The Pioneers' leading receiver is sophomore Chad Walker (Spring Hill, Fla., Central), who has pulled in six receptions for 123 yards.

Marietta enters the week ranked third in scoring defense, giving up 17.0 points per week. The Pioneers rank third in total defense. They are allowing 294.0 yards per game. The Pioneers rank fourth against the run (110.0) and fifth against the pass (184.0). Marietta has recorded 5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss to go along with 1 interception this season. The Pioneers have allowed their opponents to convert 4-of-7 red zone chances, all touchdowns. Opponents have converted 14-of-33 third-down and 2-of-9 fourth down opportunities against Marietta.

Senior George Davis (Warren, Newton Falls) leads the team with 19 total stops, 17 solo, while senior Clinton Thompson (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) and sophomore James Borwell (Katy, Texas, Morton Ranch) both have 14 hits. Senior Corey Lemke (Loundonville, Loundonville) is 1-for-2 in field goal attempts, hitting from 39 yards. Freshman Sean Munfield (Marietta, Marietta) is averaging 38.4 yards on 7 punts. Marietta, led by Davis, is averaging 19.7 yards on kickoff returns.

MARIETTA NOTES

THE RECORDS: Saturday marks the fourth week of the 2009 season. Marietta College enters the game 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Baldwin-Wallace College is 0-2, 0-1 in league play.

GAME TIME: 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, Tressel Field at George Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio.

THE COACHES: Marietta's Jeff Filkovski is in his second season as the leader of the Pioneers. He is the former signal caller for the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. Filkovski, who earned his bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 1991, led the Gators to a national championship in 1990. Baldwin-Wallace's John Snell is in his eighth year as the Yellow Jackets head football coach. The 1987 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace has a career record of 46-28.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Saturday is the 32nd time that the two teams will meet on the gridiron. The series began in 1974 with Baldwin-Wallace winning 73-0. It was the first of 17 straight wins for the Yellow Jackets in the series. Marietta, however, has captured three of the last five meetings, dating back to 2004.

LAST MEETING: Visiting Baldwin-Wallace broke open a one-possession game with 28 points in the third quarter en route to a 45-16 victory on Sept. 27, 2008. The Yellow Jackets out gained the Pioneers in total yards 543-261. Lamar Hunter (South Euclid/Brush) paced Marietta's offence with 17 carries for 60 yards and 4 receptions for 33 yards and 1 touchdown. Baldwin-Wallace's Anthony Gardner completed 17-of-28 passes and threw for 224 yards with 2 passing and 2 rushing touchdowns in the victory, B-W's second straight in the series. Grant Cowell (Perrysville/Loundonville) led all tacklers with 13 total hits, including 2 sacks, while Paul Berger and Pete Taylor paced the Yellow Jackets with 9 stops.

LAST GAME FOR MARIETTA: A consistent rushing attack combined with some timely passing and defensive stops helped the Pioneers rally past visiting Wilmington College and post a 24-20 victory Saturday (Sept. 19) night in its OAC opener at Don Drumm Stadium. Lamar Hunter (South Euclid/Brush) carried the ball a career-high 31 times and ran for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns. Andrew Keller (Cincinnati/Glen Este) finished 11-of-16 and threw for 167 yards and 1 score. He went 5-of-6 and compiled 111 yards through the air in the fourth quarter. Chad Walker (Spring Hill, Fla./Central) pulled in a team-best 3 catches for 99 yards, including a 62-yard reception late in the game. George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) paced the defense with a career-high 16 stops, while James Borwell (Katy, Texas/Morton Ranch) added 11 hits in the win.

LAST GAME FOR BALDWIN-WALLACE: The Yellow Jackets fell 43-29 at rival John Carroll on Saturday (Sept. 19) night. Baldwin-Wallace out gained John Carroll 439-347 but had 6 turnovers in the loss. Anthony Gardner completed 25-of-39 passes and threw for 264 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Tim Miker was the leading ball carrier after rushing 12 times for 58 yards. John McGraw added 10 rushes for 46 yards with 2 touchdowns and 5 catches for 24 yards. Pete Taylor had a team-best 10 tackles in the game.

RADIO COVERAGE: Marietta College is scheduled to have WMRT-FM 88.3, its student radio station, and WMOA-AM 1490 broadcast the game for Pioneer fans. The broadcasts will take the air with a short pregame at 6:20 p.m. WBWC-FM 88.3 will also carry the game locally for Yellow Jacket fans.

TV COVERAGE: The game will be also broadcast on SportsTime Ohio. It will air Saturday night at 11 p.m. and again on Sunday morning at 5 a.m.

CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED: Marietta College will have two captains during the 2009 season: senior defensive back George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) and senior offensive lineman Chris Carter (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury).

GETTING OFF TO A QUICK START: Marietta will look to get off to a fast start out of the locker room after struggling in the first half in recent years. The Pioneers were out scored 87-26 in the first quarter and 108-20 in the second quarter of 2008. So far in 2009, Marietta is out scoring its opponents 7-6 in the first quarter and 20-0 in the third quarter. The Pioneers have been out scored 14-7 in the second frame and 14-10 in the final period.

CONTROLLING THE CLOCK: Marietta will look to dominate the time of possession in 2009. Last year, the Pioneers led in time of possession in 7 games. This year, Marietta has trailed in time of possession of its victories, holding onto the ball for an average of 27:33 while on defense for 32:26.

TURNOVERS: Marietta needs to improve its turnover margin. In 2008, the Pioneers ranked 10th in the OAC and 233rd in NCAA Division III with a -21 turnover margin. This year's turnover margin currently stands at -3.

THIS WEEK IN THE OAC: There is a full slate of games on the OAC schedule this week. Ohio Northern visits Otterbein at 1:30 p.m., while Heidelberg plays host to John Carroll, Capital travels to Wilmington and Mount Union welcomes Muskingum at 7 p.m.

NEXT GAME: On Oct. 3, Marietta welcomes Capital for a kickoff at 1:30 p.m., while Baldwin-Wallace plays host to Otterbein at 2 p.m.

OAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Congratulations to senior strong safety George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) for being named the OAC Defensive Player of the Week. Davis had a career-high 16 total hits, including 14 solo stops, in the win over Wilmington.
