Marietta to play #6 Guilford for 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament title

MARIETTA, Ohio — Host Marietta College and #6 Guilford College both held off late rallies by their opponents Tuesday (Dec. 29) night to advance to the championship game of the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament at Ban Johnson Arena. Tip-off of Wednesday (Dec. 30) night's match-up will be at 7:30 p.m. Grove City College and Ohio Wesleyan University will compete in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.

#6 Guilford College held off a resilient Ohio Wesleyan University squad 79-72 to win the first game of the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament Tuesday (Dec. 29) evening at Ban Johnson Arena. With the victory, the Quakers improved to 9-1 and advanced to Wednesday (Dec. 30) night's championship game against host Marietta College at 7:30 p.m. The Battling Bishops fell to 2-6 and will play in the consolation game against Grove City at 5:30 p.m.

Guilford's Tyler Sanborn led all scorers with 22 points while adding a game-best 15 rebounds. Rhett Bonner and Clay Henson pitched in with 18 and 16 points, respectively, for the Quakers. Pat Pellerite paced Ohio Wesleyan with 15 points. Andy Winters and Dillon McBride came off the bench to added 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss.

Guilford, which led 40-31 at the half, shot 48.2% (27-of-56) from the floor, including 43.8% (7-of-16) from beyond the arc. Ohio Wesleyan shot 44.4% (28-of-63) from the field and 38.5% (10-of-26) from long range while out rebounding Guilford 38-36.

Marietta College defeated Grove City College 74-67 in game two of the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament Tuesday (Dec. 29) night at Fenton Court. The Pioneers improved to 4-6 and will play #6 Guilford College in Wednesday (Dec. 30) night's championship game at 7:30 p.m. Marietta will look to win its third straight Shrine Tournament title and 18th overall. Grove City fell to 5-5 and will play Ohio Wesleyan in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore Kevin Knab (Lakewood, Lakewood) led the Pioneers with 18 points while dishing out a team-high four assists. Sophomore Joe Puch (Brunswick, Brunswick) added 14 points, while senior Daun Lutes (New Matamoras, Frontier) scored 11 off the bench for the Pioneers. Sophomore Trevor Halter (Malvern, Malvern) also chipped in with 10 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.

Grove City was led by Brett Matson with a game-high 21 points. Andy O'Keefe added 18 points and collected a game-high 9 rebounds in the Wolverine loss.

The Pioneers finished the game shooting 25-of-57 (43.9%) from the field, 6-of-25 (24.0%) from three and 18-of-28 (64.3%) from the free throw line. Grove City shot 23-of-49 (46.9%) from the field, 7-of-24 (29.2%) from three and 14-of-20 (70.0%) from the free throw line. The Pioneers out rebounded the Wolverines 35-33 and committed a season-low 10 turnovers, while the Wolverines committed 18.
