MARIETTA, Ohio — Host Marietta College defeated Oberlin College 76-69 and the College of Mount St. Joseph topped Thiel College 73-56 Saturday (Nov. 28) on the first day of the 25th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament at Ban Johnson Arena. The tournament is being sponsored by CiCi's Pizza, Dixie Sporting Goods, the Hampton Inn and the Microtel Inn & Suites.
The Pioneers (1-2) will look to win their 12th Turkey Shoot title and first since 2003 when they host the Lions of Mount St. Joseph (3-2) at 3 p.m. Thiel (1-3) will battle Oberlin (0-3) in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Kat O'Niell filled up the stat sheet to lead the College of Mount St. Joseph to a 73-56 victory over Thiel College Saturday (Nov. 28) evening in the first game of the 25th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament, on the campus of Marietta College.
O'Niell scored a game-high 14 points while adding 7 rebounds and 7 assists for the Lions, who improved to 3-2 and advanced to Sunday (Nov. 29) afternoon's Turkey Shoot Championship against Marietta College at 3 p.m. Thiel (1-3) will play Oberlin College in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Carolyn Holt added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Tricia Siemer and Brittany Sparks both contributed 11 points, as Mount St. Joseph shot 50.8% (33-of-65) in the victory.
Thiel, which shot 39.7% (25-of-63), also had 4 players reach double digits in the scoring column. Kelly Barzak paced the Tomcats with 12 points. Rianne Thornton added 11 points and 5 assists, while Ashley Davis and Jasmin Jones both had 10 points in the loss.
Mount St. Joseph used an 11-5 run over the final 5:25 of the first half to take control of the game and enter intermission with a 37-30 advantage. The Lions' lead grew to as many as 18 points in the second half en route to the 73-56 victory.

Jones connected on 6-of-11 three-pointers and added 8 rebounds, while Hoff also pitched in 7 boards for the Pioneers, who moved to 1-2 and advanced to take on the College of Mount St. Joseph in Sunday (Nov. 29) afternoon's Turkey Shoot Championship at 3 p.m. Oberlin (0-3) will play Thiel College in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) finished with a 13 points and 13 rebounds, and
Whitney Swain (Belpre/Warren Local) contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds for Marietta. The Pioneers shot 35.3% (24-of-68) and out-rebounded Oberlin 55-38.
Syrea Thomas paced the Yeowomen with a game-best 25 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Kelly Warlich hit 5-of-9 from long range and added 20 points and 6 rebounds for Oberlin, who finished the night hitting 37.1% (23-of-62) from the field.
Oberlin opened the game with a 9-0 run over the first 4 minutes. Marietta then answered with an 8-0 charge to gain its footing. The teams then went back-and-forth for the rest of the half, and the Yeowomen took a 39-36 lead into intermission. Oberlin's advantage grew back to 8 points early in the second half. The Pioneers tied the game at 53-53 and then again at 64-64 before a three-pointer from Jones gave them the lead for good, 76-64, with 3 minutes left on the clock. That sparked a 12-4 run to end the game, which allowed Marietta to pull away 76-69.
