Marietta visits John Carroll for week 6 OAC showdown

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2009 Marietta College football season continues Saturday (Oct. 10) afternoon with a 2 p.m. match-up against host John Carroll University at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio. Both teams will be looking to bounce back from losses in week 5, while the Pioneers are also attempting to defeat the Blue Streaks for the first time in series history. [Game Notes (PDF)]

Here is a look at both teams:

John Carroll University:
Led by 11th-year Head Coach Regis Scafe, the John Carroll University football team enters the game looking to continue its dominance in the series. John Carroll ranks sixth in the OAC in scoring, averaging 24.0 points. The Blue Streaks rank eighth in total offense (327.0). They are third in passing (246.8) and ninth in rushing (80.2). John Carroll is the third-most penalized team in the OAC, giving up an average of 70.8 penalty yards in 2009. The Blue Streaks have converted 14-of-18 red-zone chances (12 touchdowns) and 24-of-57 third down opportunities this season. John Carroll is controlling the clock for 29:01 while on defense for 30:59. The Blue Streaks have collected 81 first downs, while its defense has also allowed 76.

Senior Jeff Javorek has completed 79-of-139 passes and thrown for 824 yards with 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He is averaging an OAC-best 274.7 yards passing. Sophomore DaQuan Grobsmith is the team's leading rusher, having run for 220 yards and 1 score on 48 carries. Senior Frank Ross is pacing the receivers with an OAC-high 26 catches for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns, while senior Scottie Williams has added 22 catches for 283 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Blue Streaks defense is allowing 23.5 points per game, which ranks fourth in the OAC. John Carroll has surrendered 157.5 yards on the ground and 199.0 yards through the air, which both rank fifth in the OAC. The Blue Streaks, who have a -1 turnover margin, have compiled 11 sacks and 25 tackles for loss this season. They have allowed their opponents to convert 14-of-18 red zone chances (12 touchdowns). Opponents have converted 27-of-61 third-down opportunities against John Carroll.

Senior Jim Gilchrist leads the squad in total tackles with 39, which ranks second in the OAC. Junior Karl Roshong has averaged 38.9 yards on 21 punts. John Carroll is averaging 15.7 yards on kickoff returns and 4.5 yards on punt returns in 2009.

Marietta College: Head Coach Jeff Filkovski's Marietta College football team is looking snap a two-game losing streak and earn their first ever win in the series. Marietta is averaging 17.5 points and 315.2 yards this season, which rank 10th and ninth, respectively, in the OAC. Of those yards, 134.5 come on the ground and 180.8 are through the air. The Pioneers are ranked seventh in rushing offense and ninth in passing offense. Marietta has converted 19-of-43 third down and 10-of-11 red-zone chances (9 touchdowns). The Pioneers enter with a -8 turnover margin. Marietta trails its opponents in time of possession, holding onto the ball for an average of 28:52, while on defense for 31:08. The Pioneers are the third-least penalized team in the OAC, giving up an average of 52.0 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Keller (Cincinnati/Glen Este) is 63-of-98 passing, throwing for 723 yards. He has thrown 7 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in four games. Senior Lamar Hunter (South Euclid/Brush), the OAC's second leading rusher, leads the ground attack with 69 rushes for 331 yards. Hunter has rushed for 2 touchdowns this season. Sophomore Jahmaal Jones (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) has 15 catches for 213 yards, while junior Cory Kriechbaum (Marietta/Marietta) has pulled in 15 receptions for 124 yards. Both have caught 2 touchdowns.

Marietta enters the week ranked sixth in scoring defense, giving up 26.2 points per week. The Pioneers rank fifth in total defense. They are allowing 366.0 yards per game. The Pioneers rank seventh against the run (175.2) and fourth against the pass (190.8). Marietta has recorded 6 sacks and 16 tackles for loss to go along with 1 interception this season. The Pioneers have allowed their opponents to convert 12-of-17 red zone chances (9 touchdowns). Opponents have converted 26-of-56 third-down and 3-of-11 fourth down opportunities against Marietta.

Sophomore James Borwell (Katy, Texas/Morton Ranch) leads the Pioneers with 28 stops, while senior George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) is second with 27 hits. Senior Corey Lemke (Loundonville/Loundonville) is 1-for-2 in field goal attempts, hitting from 18 yards. Freshman Sean Munfield (Marietta/Marietta) is averaging 34.7 yards on 12 punts. Marietta is averaging 18.0 yards on kickoff returns and 2.7 yards on punt returns in 2009.

MARIETTA NOTES

THE RECORDS: Saturday marks the sixth week of the 2009 season. Marietta College enters the game 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). John Carroll University is 2-2, 2-1 in league play.

GAME TIME: 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio.

THE COACHES: Marietta's Jeff Filkovski is in his second season as the leader of the Pioneers. He is the former signal caller for the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. Filkovski, who earned his bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 1991, led the Gators to a national championship in 1990. John Carroll's Regis Scafe is in his 11th year as the Blue Streak head football coach. The 1971 graduate of Case Western Reserve University has a career record of 89-69.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Saturday marks the 22nd time that the two teams will meet on the gridiron. The series began in 1929 with John Carroll winning 25-6. The Blue Streaks have never lost to the Pioneers and hold a 20-0-1 lead in the series. The tie came in week three of 1995 when Marietta finished the season 8-1-1.

LAST MEETING: John Carroll forced 6 Marietta turnovers en route to a 31-6 victory on Oct. 11 at Don Drumm Stadium. The Blue Streaks out gained the Pioneers 347-316 in total offense. Garrett Banks (Baberton/) led Marietta with 24 carries for 87 yards, while George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) had a team-best 7 total hits. Mark Petruziello completed 24-of-45 passes and threw for 267 yards, while Frank Ross caught 6 passes for 77 yards to lead John Carroll. Michael Nettling finished with a game-high 13 stops in the victory.

LAST GAME FOR MARIETTA: The Pioneers turned the ball over on 5 of their first 8 possessions in a 37-13 loss at home against #22 Capital. Capital out gained Marietta in total yards 364-283 and led 27-0 at intermission. Andrew Keller (Cincinnati/Glen Este) finished 18-of-27 and threw for 157 yards and two scores. Tevin Dones (Antioch, Calif./Antioch) finished with a team-high 16 carries for 69 yards, Alexander Fountain (Live Oak, Fla./Suwannee) added 10 carries for 48 yards, while Nate Zills (Alma, W.Va./Tyler) had 8 carries for 28 yards. Chad Walker (Spring Hill, Fla./Central) pulled in a team-best four catches for 47 yards, while Jahmaal Jones (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) and Cory Kriechbaum (Marietta/Marietta) added 3 receptions for 38 and 13 yards, respectively. Dan Starr (Senecaville/Buckeye Trail) led all tacklers with a career-high 10 stops, while George Grady added 7 and five others Pioneers had 4.

LAST GAME FOR JOHN CARROLL:
Wilmington's defense kept John Carroll out of the end zone with a late goal line stand to help the Quakers upset the Blue Streaks 24-16. Jeff Javorek finished the game 25-of-44 and threw for 274 yards. Chris Esparza caught a team-high 7 passes for 51 yards, while DaQuan Grobsmith has 10 carries for 45 yards. C.J. Seitzinger had a team-best 9 stops in the loss.

RADIO COVERAGE: Marietta College is scheduled to have WMRT-FM 88.3, its student radio station, broadcast the game for Pioneer fans. The broadcast will take the air with a short pregame at 1:50 p.m.

CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED: Marietta College will have two captains during the 2009 season: senior defensive back George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) and senior offensive lineman Chris Carter (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury).

GETTING OFF TO A QUICK START: Marietta will look to get off to a fast start out of the locker room after struggling in the first half in recent years. The Pioneers were out scored 87-26 in the first quarter and 108-20 in the second quarter of 2008. So far in 2009, Marietta has been out scored 37-13 in the first quarter and 37-7 in the second quarter. The Pioneers have a 27-14 advantage in the third frame and a 23-17 lead in the final period.

GALAXY PIZZA PLAYER OF THE GAME: Congratulations to freshman George Grady for being named the Galaxy Pizza Player of the Game against Capital. This week's Galaxy Pizza Player of the Game will be announced on Saturday.

CONTROLLING THE CLOCK: Marietta will look to dominate the time of possession in 2009. Last year, the Pioneers led in time of possession in 7 games. This year, Marietta has trailed in time of possession in all three games, holding onto the ball for an average of 28:52 while on defense for 31:08.

TURNOVERS: Marietta needs to improve its turnover margin. In 2008, the Pioneers ranked 10th in the OAC and 233rd in NCAA Division III with a -21 turnover margin. This year's turnover margin currently stands at -8.

THIS WEEK IN THE OAC: There is a full slate of games on the OAC schedule this week. Ohio Northern plays host to Heidelberg, Capital welcomes Mount Union and Wilmington travels to Muskingum at 1:30 p.m. In addition, Otterbein makes the trek to Baldwin-Wallace at 2 p.m.

83RD SEASON OF OAC PLAY: Saturday's game will continue Marietta's 84th season of football in the OAC. The Pioneers, who joined the league in 1926, are 170-309-11 (.358) all-time in Conference play.

NEXT GAME: On Oct. 17, Marietta plays host to Ohio Northern, while John Carroll visits Capital. Both games will kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
