MARIETTA — John Hamborsky has pitched in many big games during his Marietta career. However, none may have been bigger than Sunday's performance.
The 5-foot-7 Hamborsky (9-2) struck out eight, while giving up 10 hits and four runs as the Pioneers defeated Montclair 9-4 in the NCAA Division III World Series at Pioneer Park.
After giving up three runs in the top of the first, Hamborsky settled down and allowed the Marietta hitters time to take control of this important game.
Mike Brandts blasted a three-run home run in the sixth to give the Pioneers a 9-3 lead. It is Brandts third homer of the series and 24th on the season.
Drew Witouski went 2-for-5, including a big double that drove in Roger Thompson in the first inning. Bill Holmes also singled in Witouski in the inning that cut Montclair's early lead to 3-2.
Sean Risley went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, and Frank Schossler went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run.
In the first inning, Montclair's Tim Jones belted a two-run homer, and John Deutsch doubled in a run. Deutsch finished 2-for-5, while Jim Fasano added two hits in the loss.
