MARIETTA — Can anyone stop Marietta's power-hitting third baseman Mike Brandts?
Ithaca pitcher Chris Gill couldn't on Sunday. Brandts went 5-for-5 with a double, triple, an RBI and three runs as the Pioneers defeated the Bombers 7-2 in the NCAA Division III World Series at Pioneer Park.
With the victory, Marietta (47-13-2) forced the "if necessary" game on Monday against Ithaca.
Frank Schossler and Drew Witouski also added two hits each, while Kirk Atha, Sean Risley and Bob Beamer each added an RBI in the win. Marietta also took advantage of three Ithaca errors.
Steve Oberhelman (6-1) shined on the mound for the Etta Express. He struck out five, while scattering 10 hits and giving up two runs in a complete-game win. Ithaca pitcher Chris Gill gave up 15 hits and walked five in the losing performance.
Dave Dasch, Tim Wilson, John Cole and Brian Parrotte each went 2-for-4 for the Bombers
The two national powers will meet at 1 p.m. Monday for the national championship.
