MARIETTA — Marietta continued its winning ways in the Ohio Athletic Conference, sweeping a closely contested doubleheader against Capital on Saturday, May 3, at Pioneer Park. With victories of 3-1 and 5-3, Marietta improved its record to 35-7-2 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
In the opener, ace pitcher Jim Katschke (10-3) delivered another stellar performance, striking out five and allowing just six hits in a complete-game effort. The Pioneers' offense was led by Sean Risley, who went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and an RBI, while Eric Shoup contributed a 1-for-4 performance with an RBI. Mike Brandts and Frank Schossler each added doubles to the offensive effort. For Capital, Ed Susi stood out with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
The nightcap proved to be a nail-biter, with Marietta rallying for three runs in the eighth inning to secure the win. Brandts provided a spark with a solo home run, while Risley added a double. Roger Thompson chipped in with a single and an RBI. Steve Oberhelman (4-0) earned the victory with an impressive relief appearance, striking out five over the final eight innings.
Susi once again had a strong game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the losing effort.
