MARIETTA —Marietta (36-8-2) faced a tough challenge from the Wooster Fighting Scots in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, May 8, at Pioneer Park. The teams split the series, with Marietta taking the opener 4-2 before falling in a 14-13 slugfest in the nightcap.
In the first game, John Hamborsky (7-1) turned in a strong performance on the mound for Marietta, allowing just six hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings. In an unexpected move, regular starter Jim Katschke came in to record the final out, earning his first save of the season.
The Pioneers' offense was led by John Sudges, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Eric Shoup, who finished 2-for-4. Drew Witouski, Roger Thompson, and Frank Schossler each drove in a run. For Wooster, Rick Sforzo went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Tom Daly pitched well in defeat, giving up nine hits over six innings.
The second game turned into an offensive showcase, with Wooster prevailing 14-13 behind a 15-hit attack. Rick Sforzo continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and five RBI. Bruce Benedict matched Sforzo's three hits, adding a homer, four RBI, and three runs. Dave Peterjohn also contributed three hits to the Scots' cause.
Marietta's bats came alive as well, with Sean Risley going 2-for-6 with a homer, three RBI, and two runs. Mike Brandts provided a highlight with a grand slam in the sixth inning, while Schossler added two hits.
Rich Danch earned the win for Wooster with a solid relief appearance, striking out four and allowing just two hits over the final 4 1/3 innings. Eric Shoup took the loss for Marietta.
