Marietta sweeps rival Muskingum in key OAC doubleheader

MARIETTA — The Etta Express continued their impressive run in the Ohio Athletic Conference, sweeping long-time rival Muskingum in a crucial doubleheader at Pioneer Park on Tuesday, April 29. With wins of 10-4 and 13-8, Marietta improved its stellar record to 33-7-2 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
 
In the opener, Marietta's offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up 14 hits. Sean Risley, Roger Thompson, Drew Witouski, and Bob Beamer led the charge with two hits apiece. Mike Brandts added a solo home run to the Pioneers' tally.
 
Jim Katschke (9-3) went the distance on the mound, scattering eight hits and striking out four in a complete-game victory. His strong performance set the tone for Marietta's dominant day.
 
The nightcap saw Marietta's bats explode for 13 runs in a high-scoring affair. John Sudges was the star of the game, going 3-for-4 with a double and driving in six runs. Roger Thompson continued his hot streak, matching Sudges with a 3-for-4 performance that included a solo home run and three RBI. Frank Schossler also contributed significantly, going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
 
Steve Oberhelman (3-0) secured the win with a solid relief appearance, pitching the final 3 2/3 innings. Despite the loss, Muskingum's Lee Thompson had a noteworthy performance, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI.
