Strong pitching leads MC to sweep of Mount Union

ALLIANCE — The Marietta Pioneers continued their impressive season with a sweep of Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22. The Pioneers edged out the Purple Raiders in two closely contested games, winning 6-3 and 6-4.
 
In the opener, Jim Katschke (8-3) delivered another strong performance on the mound, striking out six and scattering five hits. Marietta's offense was led by Sean Risley, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Mike Brandts and John Sudges each contributed two hits and two RBI, while Roger Thompson and Eric Shoup also collected two hits apiece. For Mount Union, Ryan Parker went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the losing effort.
 
The nightcap saw Marietta secure a 6-4 victory behind John Hamborsky's dominant pitching. Hamborsky (6-1) fanned 10 Purple Raiders and allowed just four hits over seven innings. Thompson paced the Pioneers' offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Scott McVicar added two hits, while Sudges contributed a double and two RBI. Mount Union's Pat Heddleston went 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI, and Park finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
With the sweep, Marietta improved its overall record to an impressive 29-7-2 and 6-2 in OAC play. The victories solidify the Pioneers' position as contenders in the conference as they head into the latter part of the season.
