TIFFIN — Marietta continued its dominant run in the Ohio Athletic Conference, overwhelming Heidelberg in a doubleheader with scores of 22-7 and 20-2 on Saturday, April 26. The offensive explosion improved Marietta's record to an impressive 31-7-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
In the opener, Marietta's bats were red-hot, pounding out an astounding 29 hits. Roger Thompson and Eric Shoup led the charge with four hits each, both smashing a double and a home run. Shoup drove in four runs, while Thompson added one RBI. The power surge continued with Sean Risley, Jim Eddy, and Scott McVicar also going deep for the Pioneers. Risley contributed three RBI, and Drew Witouski chipped in with two hits and four RBI.
Mike Kramer (5-1) went the distance on the mound, striking out eight while scattering 12 hits for the complete-game victory. Despite the lopsided score, Heidelberg's Mike Satkowiak had a strong showing, going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.
The nightcap saw no let-up from Marietta's offense as they racked up 21 hits in a 20-2 rout. Risley, Thompson, and Bob Beamer each collected three hits, while Thompson, Jeff Marbaugh, and Kirk Atha all homered for the Pioneers.
Steve Oberhelman (2-0) earned the win with a stellar five-inning performance, striking out five and allowing just two hits. Jim Anderson and Jim Eddy finished the game in relief. Roger Lucas was a bright spot for Heidelberg, going 3-for-4 in the losing effort.
