Marietta wins two key OAC games against Ohio Northern

MARIETTA — Marietta College continued its strong play in the Ohio Athletic Conference, sweeping a doubleheader against Ohio Northern on Saturday, April 19, at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers dominated the opener 8-1 before securing a 13-7 victory in the nightcap. The wins improved Marietta's overall record to an impressive 27-7-2 and boosted their OAC mark to 4-2.
 
In the first game, Jim Katschke turned in a masterful performance on the mound for Marietta. Katschke went the distance, striking out seven, allowing just three hits, and not issuing a single walk. The complete-game victory improved his record to 7-3 on the season.
 
Offensively, John Sudges led the charge for the Pioneers with a double and three RBI. Shawn Thomas also contributed significantly, adding a triple and three RBI. Frank Schossler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to round out Marietta's attack.
 
For Ohio Northern, Adam Rector collected two of the Polar Bears' three hits in the losing effort.
 
The Pioneers' bats stayed hot in the second game, powering the team to a 13-7 victory. Sean Risley, Roger Thompson, and Mike Brandts each collected two hits to pace the Marietta offense. Frank Schossler continued his strong day at the plate, belting a solo home run and scoring three runs.
 
On the mound, John Hamborsky improved to 5-1 on the season, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs over eight solid innings of work.
 
Ohio Northern's offense showed more life in the nightcap, with Rob Weber going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ron Ruhe and Larry Hiser each added two hits for the Polar Bears.
