Marietta rebounds with dominant sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan

MARIETTA — Marietta College bounced back in emphatic fashion, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 15, at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers shut out Wesleyan 9-0 in the opener before unleashing an offensive onslaught in a 19-3 rout in the nightcap. The wins improved Marietta's record to an impressive 25-7-2 on the season.
 
In the first game, Bob Beamer led the charge for Marietta, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, including a triple. Sean Risley showcased his speed and power, finishing 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Scott McVicar also contributed a triple to the Pioneers' extra-base hit parade.
 
On the mound, Mike Kramer dominated WV Wesleyan's lineup, striking out eight and allowing just four hits over five innings. Eric Shoup closed out the game with two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
 
For the Bobcats (6-13), Denny Martire went 2-for-3 in the losing effort.
 
The Pioneers' bats exploded in the second game, as Marietta pounded out 21 hits en route to a 19-3 victory. Frank Schossler had a monster game, going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, and five RBI. Mike Brandts matched Schossler's hit total, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, and two RBI.
 
Roger Thompson added to the power display with a 2-for-4 performance that included a home run and three RBI. Risley continued his stellar day, going 3-for-6 with three RBI, a double, a stolen base, and three runs scored.
 
Jim Eddy earned the win on the mound, improving to 3-0 on the season after allowing five hits over five innings of work.
 
For West Virginia Wesleyan, Jim Gainer provided a bright spot in the loss, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
