PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Marietta College bounced back from an earlier defeat to secure a narrow 2-1 victory over Grandview (Iowa) in the second game of the day on Saturday, March 8.
Mike Kramer was the star for the Pioneers (1-1), delivering a dominant performance on the mound. The right-hander went the distance, allowing just six hits while striking out three in a complete-game win.
The game was a classic pitchers' duel, with Grandview's Randy Woodstock nearly matching Kramer's effort. Woodstock surrendered only two hits and struck out four, but was ultimately undone by two unearned runs.
Marietta's offense made the most of limited opportunities. Pinch hitter Jeff Marbaugh provided a spark, going 1-for-1 and scoring a run. Pinch runner Scott Lewis also crossed the plate for the Pioneers, while Roger Thompson collected the team's other hit.
For Grandview, Brent Rice stood out with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, but it wasn't enough to overcome Kramer's stellar outing.
