MARIETTA — Marietta College continued its winning ways with a doubleheader sweep against Geneva (Pa.) on Saturday, March 29, at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers edged out a 7-6 victory in the opener before outlasting Geneva 15-11 in a slugfest nightcap. The wins improved Marietta's impressive record to 17-5-2, while Geneva fell to 2-16.
In the first game, Sean Risley led the Pioneers' offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Shawn Thomas provided the power, blasting a home run and driving in four runs.
Jim Katschke earned the win on the mound, improving to 3-2 on the season. Katschke struck out eight while allowing five hits and five runs over six innings. Jim Eddy secured the save, giving up one run and striking out one in the seventh inning.
For Geneva, Scott Filby had a standout performance in the losing effort, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.
The bats came alive for both teams in the second game, with Marietta emerging victorious in a 15-11 slugfest. Risley continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Roger Thompson matched Risley's hit total, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI.
Mike Brandts and Bob Beamer each contributed a home run, with Beamer driving in an impressive five runs. John Sudges chipped in with two hits to round out Marietta's potent offense.
Jim Anderson earned the win in relief, improving to 4-0 on the season after pitching 2 2/3 innings.
Geneva's offense put up a valiant effort in the loss, led by Daryl Patten's 5-for-6 performance with two RBI. Gregg Fouts went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI, while Mike Kirkwood added two hits and three RBI.
