Marietta sweeps Charleston in dominant fashion

MARIETTA — Marietta College continued its strong start to the season with a doubleheader sweep against Charleston at Pioneer Park on Tuesday, March 25. The Pioneers edged out a 3-2 victory in the opener before unleashing an offensive onslaught in a 22-2 rout in the nightcap. The wins improved Marietta's record to an impressive 15-5-2, while Charleston fell to 0-10.

In the first game, Jim Anderson turned in a stellar performance on the mound, improving his record to 3-0. Anderson allowed just two hits and two runs while striking out four. John Hamborsky came on in the seventh inning to secure the save, striking out one in a scoreless frame.

Roger Thompson led the offense, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Mike Brandts and John Sudges each contributed a single and an RBI, while Sean Risley added a triple and a run to help secure the narrow victory.

The Pioneer bats exploded in the second game, as Marietta pounded out an astounding 25 hits en route to a 22-2 win. Sudges had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Shawn Thomas provided the power, going 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI, while Brandts continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 performance that included a triple and three RBI.

Thompson and Barry Gibson also contributed triples to Marietta's extra-base hit parade. The offensive outburst provided more than enough support for starting pitcher Jim Katschke, who improved to 2-2 on the season after allowing just three hits over five innings of work.

For Charleston, Mike Winters went 2-for-3 in the second game, providing a bright spot in an otherwise difficult day for the visitors.
