MARIETTA — In its first home game of the 1986 season, Marietta College split a non-conference doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, March 22, dropping the first game 11-6 before bouncing back with a convincing 16-5 victory in the nightcap. The split moves Marietta's record to 13-5-2 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan now stands at 5-6.
In the opener, Marietta struggled on the mound as starter Jim Katschke was hit hard, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work. Ohio Wesleyan's offense took advantage, with Scott Tedder and Brad Warnimont each going 3-for-4. Tedder drove in two runs, while Warnimont contributed three RBI. Scott Walberry added two hits and two RBI for the Bishops.
Hank Jones earned the win for Ohio Wesleyan with an impressive relief appearance, tossing 5 2/3 hitless innings and striking out four.
For Marietta, Sean Risley led the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Drew Witouski chipped in with a hit and two RBI.
The Pioneers bounced back in the second game behind a strong pitching performance from John Hamborsky. The right-hander improved to 4-0 on the season, striking out four while allowing five hits and four runs.
Marietta's offense exploded in the nightcap, with several players contributing to the 16-run outburst. Mike Brandts went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Shawn Thomas also homered, going 1-for-2 with three RBI. Frank Schossler had a productive game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, and Scott McVicar added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI.
Despite the loss, Ohio Wesleyan's Scott Tedder continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with three RBI in the second game.
