PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Marietta College continued its winning ways on Thursday, March 13, narrowly defeating Illinois State 3-1 in a well-pitched contest. The victory improved the Pioneers' record to 7-3-1 on their Florida trip.
John Hamborsky was the star of the game for Marietta, turning in a masterful complete-game performance on the mound. Hamborsky struck out four batters while allowing just six hits and one run over the course of the game. The win improved his season record to 2-0, cementing his role as a key member of the Pioneers' pitching staff.
Offensively, Marietta did just enough to support Hamborsky's efforts. Bill Holmes led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sean Risley also had a productive day at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a double.
The Pioneers' offense showed its depth, with Eric Shoup, Jeff Marbaugh, Mike Brandts, and Frank Schossler each contributing a single to the team's eight-hit attack.
Illinois State's Bruce Prybrulinski matched Hamborsky for much of the game, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs in a solid outing.
