PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Marietta College's winning streak came to an end on Tuesday, March 11, as they fell to Grandview (Iowa) 13-8 in a slugfest. Despite a solid offensive showing, the Pioneers couldn't overcome Grandview's potent attack, dropping their record to 5-2-1 on their Florida trip.
Grandview's Tom Sharp led the charge against Marietta, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Sharp's performance was complemented by Mark Zeralasky and Allen Olso, who each contributed two hits.
On the mound, Grandview's Pat Yacinich proved to be the difference-maker. Coming on in relief, Yacinich shut down Marietta's offense, not allowing a hit or run over the final 3 2/3 innings to secure the win for his team.
For Marietta, John Sudges continued his strong play, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bob Beamer also made his presence felt, delivering a double and driving in two runs.
Marietta's pitching struggled to contain Grandview's offense. Starting pitcher Steve Gerkin had a rough outing, allowing eight hits and eight runs. Reliever Barry Smith took the loss, giving up three runs and two hits in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
