PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Marietta College's offense continued to roll on Monday, March 10, as the Pioneers defeated Illinois State 10-5 in a high-scoring affair. The win improved Marietta's record to 3-1-1 on the young season.
Bill Holmes led the charge for the Pioneers, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Holmes' power display was crucial in Marietta's offensive outburst and continued his strong start to the season.
Scott McVicar also flexed his muscles, blasting a home run and driving in three runs. The long ball duo of Holmes and McVicar provided the bulk of Marietta's run production in the contest.
Sean Risley and Bob Beamer contributed to the offensive effort as well, each collecting two hits to help keep the pressure on Illinois State's pitching staff.
On the mound, Jim Katschke bounced back from his season-opening loss to earn his first win of the year. Katschke went the distance, striking out four and scattering six hits in a complete-game victory. The strong performance helped Katschke even his record at 1-1 for the season.
For Illinois State, Pat Dowling had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2. Chris Gurchiek provided most of the Redbirds' offensive punch with a double and three RBI, but it wasn't enough to overcome Marietta's potent attack.
