MARIETTA — Marietta tallied 40 hits and 37 runs as the Pioneers easily handled Robert Morris in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, at Pioneer Park.
Steve Riley went a combined 7-for-8 with four doubles as the Etta Express defeated RMU 19-3 and 18-5. He also had seven RBI. Jim Pancher added six hits, including two home runs, four RBI two doubles and two stolen bases.
The Marietta hitting barrage was impressive.
Marty Sberna had four hits, three RBI, a homer and a stolen base, while Jeff Chaney added three hits and four RBI. Jeff Wiktorski went 4-for-7 with four RBI and two doubles.
In the second game, Gary Kohls went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI.
Marietta used seven pitchers over the two games, and all of them had solid outings.
Jim Kennedy (4-2) tossed seven innings in the opener and allowed six hits, four walks and three earned runs while striking out four. Ron Fama and Roger Hart each tossed a strong inning of relief.
In the second game, Riley (5-1) gave up five hits and struck out three over five innings for the win. John Hamborsky, Bob Sekley and Jim Katschke threw in relief.
