MARIETTA — Marietta's shot at playing for an Ohio Athletic Conference championship is still possible following a sweep of Ohio Wesleyan — 6-2 and 17-4 — at Pioneer Park on Wednesday, May 11.
The Pioneers (39-7, 10-2) pulled out a tough 6-2 win over the Bishops in the opener, which was the only game that counted toward the conference. Jon Shuler went 3-for-4 with a triple, while Dave Thomas went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Jeff Chaney went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Jim Kennedy (5-2) struck out five and gave up five hits, but no runs in 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Dave Hollenbaugh, Fody Frentsos and Eric DiMartino each had two hits for OWU.
In the second game, Marietta totaled 15 hits as Steve Riley and Marty Sberna each had three hits. Riley had four RBI and Sberna had three. Jim Pancher added two hits, two RBI and a stolen base for the Etta Express.
Ron Fama (5-2) allowed four hits and no runs over the first four innings for the win.
