PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Marietta's Mark Talarico and Jim Pancher combined to go 8-for-14 as the Pioneers swept a doubleheader against West Florida on the opening day of the 1983 season on Saturday, March 5.
Talarico was the standout in the first game as MC won 13-12 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The right fielder went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Marty Sberna went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
Second baseman Monte Duncan also added two hits and two RBI in the opener.
Sophomore Terry Mulholland picked up the win in relief as he allowed one hit and struck out one in the final inning.
West Florida's Tom Sailor went 4-for-4, while Dennis Hanson went 3-for-4 with a solo homer. Damien DiPillo and Mike Medei also had HRs for the Argonauts.
In the second game, both Marietta and West Florida each scored six runs in the final inning (fifth) as the Pioneers defeated the Argonauts 14-12.
Pancher went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Bill Varley added a homer and Gary Kohls went 2-for-3 with three RBI for Marietta (2-0). Ron Fama (1-0) struck out seven, but allowed 12 hits and five earned runs for the win.
Medei belted another homer for the Argonauts, while Hanson, Sailor, Mark Magliocco and Gregg Gullickson each had two hits.
