MARIETTA — Marietta, which has dominated opponents all season, rallied to defeat Wooster 8-4 and win the Ohio Athletic Conference championship on Saturday, May 15, at Pioneer Park. It is the 10th conference championship for Coach Don Schaly, who returned to his alma mater in 1964.
The Pioneers (51-4-3) defeated the Scots earlier in the day to sweep the conference tournament.
In the top of the fourth, Marietta's bats came to life as the Pioneers tallied six hits and scored six runs, while Wooster committed three errors. Tom Mohl and Mark Talarico each drove in two runs in the inning. Mohl singled to center scoring Ken Lisko and Jon Shuler, while Talarico tripled to right-center scoring Mohl and Dan Munday.
The Pioneers also added two runs in the top of the seventh when Tom Gammiere singled to left scoring Marty Sberna, and Lisko singled to left scoring Shuler.
Jim Pancher went 2-for-4 with an RBI for MC. Lisko, Shuler and Mohl also had two hits apiece.
After a rough first inning, Dave Stovall settled down on the mound to improve to 6-0. After giving up three runs in the first frame, Stovall allowed only one other run over the final eight innings. He also struck out six.
Wooster's Bob Schmuck went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Tim Basilone was 2-for-3.
