ADA — If Marietta is going to reach the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, the Pioneers will have to win five games over the next four days.
Marietta was stunned by York College 10-7 in the first game of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Ohio University in Ada, Ohio.
The Spartans, who are making just their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament, scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the third inning to take a 8-0 lead. Marietta starter Dave Stovall (6-1) gave up all eight runs, but only one was earned as the Pioneers committed five errors in the two costly innings.
York catcher Tim Stefan went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs, while first baseman Dave Hile was 3-for-5 with three RBI, a double and one run scored.
Dave Rayha scattered 10 hits and struck out two, but gave up only one run over 5 1/3 innings for the win. Gary Fisher earned a save even though Marietta tagged him with six hits and six runs over 3 2/3 innings.
Marietta's Tom Gammiere went 4-for-5 with a triple, RBI and run. Mark Talarico went 3-for-3 and Jim Pancher was 2-for-4 with an RBI. John Schaly added two hits in the loss.
