Aly Hazelwood, a 2009 Trinity (Texas) University All-American, begins her first season as the assistant volleyball coach at Marietta College in 2011-12.
"Aly is going to be an outstanding addition to our volleyball program,” Coach Costa said. “Aly exemplifies what a Division III student-athlete is all about, excelling both in the classroom and on the court while being an active member of the campus community."
A native of Baytown, Texas, Hazelwood earned All-America third team and All-South Region first team honors from the America Volleyball Coaches Association and All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first team recognition as a senior in 2009. The middle blocker finished her career ranked second in school history with 519 blocks and 15th with 868 kills. She was also named an All-SCAC third team selection as a sophomore in 2007. Hazelwood helped the Tigers reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament in both 2006 and 2009.
“Aly's experience as a player, which saw her reach two Elite 8's, will allow her to act as a great mentor to our current student-athletes as we work hard to achieve our own success on the national level,” Costa said. “Combined with Aly's coaching and administrative experience, I anticipate her being a great asset to our program from top to bottom."
Hazelwood earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Trinity University in 2009 and will receive a master’s certificate in Public Health from the University of Texas-Houston in May. While at Trinity, Hazelwood was active in the intramural sports office and was the secretary for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She also helped organize the Tigers’ Dig Pink fundraisers in 2008 and 2009.
After graduating a semester early, Hazelwood remained at Trinity and served as the Interim Director of Intramurals and Club Sports before taking on the role of Director of Volleyball Operations at Rice University during the 2010-11 school year. During that time, she also helped coach the U-18 team for the Texas Revolution Volleyball Club.
“I'm honored to be given the opportunity to work at Marietta,” Hazelwood said. “Both as a student-athlete and now as a coach, Division III volleyball is and always has been very special to me and Marietta is the ideal place for me to develop my coaching career. I look forward to learning from Ray and am excited to add to the success of the Pioneers.”
