Winter Weekend

Tomorrow, February 5 kicks off a Winter Weekend doubleheader against Ohio Northern with our women’s team at 2:00 PM and men's team 4:00 p.m. I must say I am excited for this game. We should have a good crowd and our eighth win is long over due!

I am not going to lie, since our big win against Mount Union and our defeat of Heidelberg; we have been coming up short. We are playing hard and putting forth every ounce of energy we have, which the coaches are proud of. For example, in our game against Wilmington on Wednesday we did not give up until the clock struck zero. We clawed our way back into the game, but it was a little too late after our slow start. Once we get our shots to fall we will be unstoppable. That’s why I am excited for our game on Saturday!

As the season is winding down, this season has definitely been a positive and successful one. Our record may not be the greatest, but we have improved so much! Since we are young these moments only prepare us for what is to come in the future. Our influential freshmen have gotten a taste of the OAC and know what to expect in the next few years.

Come watch us tomorrow! It’ll be a great game! Let’s get win #8!

California

Happy New Year to everyone! We have been quite busy over the past month. After studying hard for finals we took no time in preparing for our tough OAC schedule. While most students were home on break we were working hard with lifting in the morning or a shoot around followed by an afternoon practice. I’d say the hard work paid off! We are now 7-6 and 3-3 in OAC play with a win over Mount Union who was #11 in the nation! Needless to say we definitely made our mark in the OAC and across the nation. In addition to beating a ranked team, we currently rank second in the nation in free throw percentage. So, we are definitely making a statement. I always knew we had the talent; it was just a matter of time until everything came together. Tomorrow we have another tough game at Capital. It should be a good game!

Over break we got the opportunity to escape the freezing weather and enjoy the California sun. On Dec. 27, we left Marietta at 3 a.m. to catch a 7 a.m. flight. After two flights we finally made it to California. Of course, we managed to get some basketball in, but soon enough we got to see what L.A. was really about. While we were out there we went on a Hollywood bus tour. That was amazing. It is incredible how the rich and famous live. Not only do they live in lavish houses, but they also have some incredible views. Also on that tour we saw the infamous Rodeo Drive. My favorite thing we did was go to the Santa Monica Pier. It was a beautiful day and fun to hang out with my teammates on a beach with a little shopping. We also got to see Pasadena and the excitement of the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin and Texas Christian played in that bowl a few days after we left and yes, since I am from Texas, I did root for the TCU Horned Frogs! The one thing I think most of the team was excited about was seeing the store Dash, the Kardashian’s store, which is starred on their reality show. Sadly, none of the stars were there, but we at least got to see the store!

Even though we were on vacation we did play two games. We ended up 1-1. At California Lutheran the first half our shots simply did not fall, but we came out with fire the second half before coming up short. We did not let that loss bother us for our game against Cal Tech. Everyone got to play in this game where we won 75-41. It was definitely a good win!

First OAC match-up

The time has finally come! Tomorrow on December 1 we will step on the court to play Muskingum. We have been preparing and working very hard anticipating a big win. Getting this victory will really jump start the season and let the Conference know that Marietta College means business. We are all excited and cannot wait to compete.

Since my last post we have had two scrimmages and two tournaments. Our first scrimmage was against Kenyon. Unfortunately the Ladies beat us; however, we did good things and really learned a lot. We took a lot of from that scrimmage and relayed it over to our scrimmage against Hiram, which we won and played very well. It was great to see the progression we made after just after two scrimmages. Our first tournament was at Allegheny in Pennsylvania. In our first game we played Allegheny and we played so well. At one point in the second half we were up 18 points, but Allegheny slowly chipped away at our lead. The score eventually got tied up before we took the lead back. However, a Gator player made a last second shot with .7 seconds left. It was a heartbreaker, but we knew truly what we were capable of. We bounced back to win our next game against Alfred.

The following weekend, we took third in our home Turkey Shoot. We did not play out best against Penn State-Beaver but came out and played well against Wooster. We are starting to show our true potential but need to keep building and keep pushing ourselves to get better!

Preseason

We completed conditioning Oct. 15, and I know the team was happy to finally get on the court and play basketball. We have been going hard six times a week. There has been a lot of learning, from getting to know each other’s tendencies, strengths and weaknesses to installing our offense. Everything seems to be coming together, and I know I cannot wait to test out everything in our scrimmage this Sunday against Kenyon!

The team is continuing to get along very well on and off the court. On the court, every one is supportive while also competitive and pushing each other. Off the court, we are up to our usual goofy tactics and always having fun, just like any family should. This can be witnessed in the back of the concession stands at football games when Danielle, Rachel, Chelsea Clyde, Coach Shrider and myself are yelling Jersey Shore quotes! It’s always a good time!

After this scrimmage, we have one more scrimmage and then we open up our season with games in Pennsylvania, which is exciting. It has been a long time since any of us have played in a competitive game, and I know we all cannot wait to get back together and play.

A New Beginning

Summer finally came to an end, and we returned back to campus August 23. The returning players were excited to reunite and anxious to meet the new players that were to join the team. The first week back to Marietta was dedicated to getting acclimated to class and getting back into a school routine. However, the ladies found time to get into the gym and play a little basketball.

We began our open workout sessions of strength and conditioning bright and early during the second week. Tuesdays and Thursdays involve weights and conditioning at 6 a.m. On Fridays we get to sleep in a bit and began conditioning and lifting at 7 a.m. We are really pushing ourselves, but it is definitely going to help us compete in the tough Ohio Athletic Conference. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays we have Open Gyms in the evening. With so many new players we were not sure how playing together was going to go, but everyone seems to be meshing well together on and off the court.

We do not get to officially step foot on the court until October 15, but until then we are going to be working hard and putting in a lot of time in the gym. The intensity we are starting off with in preseason will only benefit us for the upcoming season!
