Marietta overcomes 19 walks to defeat Ithaca 6-5 in 1981 World Series Opener

May 29, 1981
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Pioneer’s top two hitters, John Schaly and Jim Pancher, combined for four hits, four runs scored and two runs batted in to lead Marietta over Ithaca, 6-5, in game two of the 1981 World Series at Pioneer Park. Ken Lisko and Mark Talarico each added a pair of hits in the victory.

Marietta pitchers combined to walk 19 hitters, giving Ithaca many opportunities, but the Bombers left 17 runners on base in the loss. Dale Hurst (14-2) earned the win for the Pioneers, who out hit Ithaca 11-2 in the victory, despite walking 10 hitters in 5.3 innings. Hurst allowed just one hit and struck out three. Four Pioneer hurlers were needed to finish the game.
