Hamborsky’s pitching gem propels Marietta past Montclair State 9-4

June 1, 1986
MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior pitcher John Hamborsky didn’t let a shaky first inning ruin his or the Pioneers’ day. Hamborsky (9-2), who allowed three first-inning runs, scattered one run on seven hits over the final eight innings to lead Marietta to a 9-4 victory over Montclair State and kept Marietta’s hopes for a third national championship alive.

The Pioneer offense quickly erased the deficit by scoring two runs in each of the first three innings. A two-run homer by John Sudges in the third gave Marietta the lead for good. Mike Brandts drilled his school-record 24th home run of the season in the sixth, a three-run bomb, to complete the scoring for the Pioneers. It was Brandts’ fourth of the tournament. Sean Risley, Drew Witouski and Frank Schossler each had two hits in the win that set up a showdown between Ithaca and Marietta, with the Pioneers needed two victories to claim the 1986 World Series title.
