Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer falls to Penn State Behrend 3-0

ERIE, Pa. — The Marietta College women's soccer team traveled to participate in the PSU-Behrend Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament and dropped the opening matchup to the host team, 3-0, on Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon. The loss puts the Pioneers to 1-1 on the season. The Lions improve to 1-0-1 overall.

"We learn and move on," said Marietta head coach Zack Votra. "Behrend is a very good team. Hats off to them."

Marietta got only four shot attempts in the first half as the Lions kept the action mostly on their side of the field.  The first score happened at the 3:15 mark as Marlene Andrade powered a shot past Pioneer Goalkeeper Maisee Carrier (Fairview, Pa./Fairview).  Carrier made good on her other two save attempts and Marietta only trailed by one score going into the intermission.

Penn St. Behrend took less than a minute in the second half to get some insurance.  Emily Samluk scored off of an assist by Ashley Ornowski to double the Lion lead.  Bri Ross added a score in the 53rd minute to add the lead.  Katie Heighberger (LaGrange, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) finally got a shot on goal later in the period, but could not get Marietta on the scoreboard.  The Pioneers were not able to overcome the deficit and the Lions claimed the shutout victory.

Carrier worked the full 90 minutes and came up with seven saves for the Pioneers.

The Lions out shot Marietta 18-7 and held the advantage in shots on goal, 10-1. Penn St. Behrend also held the advantage in corner kicks, taking eight corners to four for the Pioneers.

Marietta's next contest will be on Sunday (Sept. 6) when the Pioneers finish the weekend battling John Carroll University.  The match is scheduled a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
