WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College swept an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Wilmington College Saturday (May 2) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 4-3, and then took game two, 5-4.
Marietta ends the season on a five-game win streak. The Pioneers went 13-20 overall and 9-7 in the OAC. The Pioneers tied for fourth in the conference standings with Muskingum, but the Muskies won the tiebreaker and received the final spot in next week's OAC Tournament. Wilmington finishes the season 5-33 overall and 1-15 in the OAC.
After missing out on the OAC Tournament, five Pioneers finished their career in the pinstripes.
Thomson Babineau (Scituate, Mass./Calvary Chapel),
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian),
Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin),
Josh Pedersen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson), and
Shane Rothlisberger (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) were all four-year members of the Etta Express.
Marietta jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game one.
Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) smacked a two-run single to left in the top of the first and
Bradley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Ferncreek) had an RBI triple in the second.
Wilmington got on the board with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth.
Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) extended the Pioneer lead back to three runs, 4-1, with an RBI single in the seventh. The Quakers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame and had two runners on when the inning ended.
Pioneer starter
Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (6-4) retired the Quakers in order in the eighth and ninth innings for the complete-game win. Ziance allowed three runs, one earned, on 10 hits. He walked none and struck out eight.
Trent Mendenhall (2-4) started and got the loss. He gave up four runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Corey Moore and Brent Case each pitched one inning of shutout relief.
Zack Molloy (Chambersburg, Pa./Saint James) and Bogan each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.
Game two followed a similar script as the Pioneers scored four runs in the top of the first and then held on for the one-run victory. Bogan drove in two runs with a single to right and
Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) plated another with a sac fly. Marietta's first run scored on an error.
Marietta's final run of the game came in the fourth inning.
Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) drove in Babineau with a single to right center.
Wilmington chipped away at the Pioneer lead with single runs in the third, fifth, seventh and ninth innings. Dominic Depa drove in the two middle runs with a single and double.
Evan Wilson (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) (2-2) got the win in relief. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
Alex Dues (Fort Recovery, Ohio/Fort Recovery) recorded his first save throwing the ninth inning. He gave up one run on one hit.
Luke Czarnomski (Medina, Ohio/Medina) started and pitched 4.0 innings giving up one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Brad Miller (1-2) started and got the loss. He was charged with five runs, four earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out seven.
Embrescia was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.
