MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College swept a nonconference softball doubleheader from Ohio Wesleyan University Thursday (Apr. 9) afternoon at Arbuckle Field. The Pioneers won game one, 14-2 in five innings, and completed the sweep with a 10-3 win in game two. Marietta improves to 16-12, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 4-18 on the season.
The Pioneers scored in every inning in the first game.
Emilie Johnson (Lucasville, Ohio/Valley) started the fireworks with a solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the first.
Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional) added an RBI single later in the frame.
Kenzie Denzer smacked her first career home run to start the second inning.
Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) drove in two runs with a single and Sweeney picked up another RBI with an infield single extending the Pioneer lead to 6-0.
Both teams plated one run in the third and Ohio Wesleyan added a second run in the top of the fourth making it 7-2 heading into the home half of the inning. The Pioneers exploded for seven runs to put the game out of reach.
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) had a two-run double. Denzer, Johnson,
Allie Sheen (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel), and
Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) each had RBI singles in the inning.
Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) (4-3) went the distance in the circle to get the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Emma Dahlstrom (0-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Makenna Knisley gave up eight runs on 13 hits in 1.2 innings.
Johnson and Sweeney each had three hits in the game for the Pioneers. Heath, Denzer,
Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington), and
Grace Elliott (Akron, Ohio/Green) had two hits apiece.
In the second game, Marietta used a six-run second inning to take control of the game early. The Pioneers added one run in the third and three more in the fourth. Ohio Wesleyan avoided the mercy rule with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (6-4) started and got the win for Marietta. She tossed 4.0 shutout innings scattering three hits.
Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) picked up the save throwing 3.0 innings and giving up three runs on four hits.
Olivia Basil (1-8) got the loss. She was charged with 10 runs, seven earned, on seven hits with eight walks and six strikeouts. Emma Dahlstrom threw the final 2.1 innings and didn't allow a hit.
Grace was the lone Pioneer in the game with two hits.
Marietta travels to Penn State Behrend for a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 12). The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
