MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and Muskingum University split an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday (Apr. 8) at Pioneer Park. The Muskies won game one, 4-0, while the Pioneers took game tw0, 2-1 in 10 innings. Marietta moves to 7-14 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. Muskingum is 10-15 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.
Pitching ruled the day in both games as all four starting pitchers turned in quality starts. Max Vosters (3-2) tossed the complete game shutout for the Muskies in game one. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out seven.
Marietta starter,
Austin Ziance (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) (4-4) was tagged with the loss. Ziance worked 8.0 innings and gave up one unearned run on eight hits. He struck out six.
Jared Bees (Pittsburgh, Pa./Eden Christian) allowed three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Zach Madan (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Lake Catholic) pitched the final third of an inning.
Muskingum took advantage of a throwing error to plate an unearned run in the top of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the Muskies added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
Diego DeCello (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) had both of Marietta's hits in the first game.
In the second game, Pioneer starting pitcher
Luke Czarnomski (Medina, Ohio/Medina) was dominating striking out 12 Muskie hitters in 7.0 innings on the mound. He allowed one run on two hits.
Reece Rupert (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) worked 1.0 inning of relief before turning the ball over to
Cooper Fiehrer (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) (1-2) who picked up the win giving up no runs on three hits in 2.0 innings. Pioneer pitchers finished the game with 16 total strikeouts.
Lex Castaneda started and threw 6.0 innings for Muskingum. He allowed one run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Four other Muskies toed the rubber in the game. Gavin Schultz (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
Bryce Bogan (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) drove in
Jameson Embrescia (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) with a single to left giving Marietta a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Muskies responded with an RBI single from Grant Mellerson in the top of the third.
The score remained tied at one until the bottom of the tenth inning. Following a lead off strikeout,
Bradley Jones (Louisville, Ky./Ferncreek) and
Michael Ciavolella (Tallmadge, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) both walked. Muskingum went to the bullpen and brought in Jake Roshau to pitch.
Roshau got DeCello to fly out to left for the second out of the inning.
Zack Molloy (Chambersburg, Pa./Saint James) stepped to the plate and line the first pitch through the right side of the infield. Jones rounded third and just slid under the tag by Muskingum catcher Josh Beavon with the winning run.
Molloy and Bogan each had two hits in the game for Marietta.
Marietta travels to Granville on Sunday (Apr.12) for a pair of games. The Pioneers take on No. 1 ranked Denison University at noon and then play Anderson University at 3:30 p.m.
