Softball loses two on opening day

VIERA, Florida — The Marietta College softball team opened the 2026 season Saturday (Mar. 7) at the Space Coast Spring Games. The Pioneers lost to Wisconsin-Superior, 2-0, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 8-3.
 
Wisconsin-Superior got a one-out triple from Larissa Snyder in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tessa Twedt followed with a double driving in Snyder. Later if the inning, Samantha Swartz smacked a single to center plating Kylie Zwak, who reached on a walk.
 
Abby Mitchell (3-1) scattered four singles and struck out four to get the shutout win. Aiyana Hancock (Marietta, Ohio/Warren Local) (0-1) started in the circle for Marietta and was tagged with the loss working 4.0 innings. She allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Kylie Cobb (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) made her collegiate debut and gave up no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. She walked two and struck out one.
 
Liz White (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) had a pair of singles for the Pioneers. Adisson Heath (Weston, W.Va./Lewis County) and Katie Sweeney (Alexandria, N.H./Newfound Regional) had one hit apiece. Snyder went 2-for-3 with the triple for Wisconsin-Superior.
 
In the second game of the day, RPI took advantage of some control issues in the circle for Marietta to score three runs in the top of the first inning. Sarah Decker and Olivia Termi each worked bases-loaded walks driving in runs. Evann McDowell plated the third run with a single.
 
The Pioneers got on the board in the second inning when Becca Streets (Buckeye Lake, Ohio/Hebron Lakewood) led off with a triple and scored on a ground out from Katies Sweeney. A Marietta error led to a pair of unearned runs for RPI in the third. MC got the runs right back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single from Heath.
 
Rensselaer added an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the 8-3 victory.
 
Decker (1-0) started and got the win throwing 4.0 innings. She allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Jackie Cutting pitched 2.0 shutout innings and Nicole Spaulding worked a scoreless seventh inning.
 
Candace Walters (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) (0-1) took the loss. She started and pitched 4.2 innings giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits with seven walks and two strikeouts. Emma Cozza (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) was charged with three runs, one earned, on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
 
Camryn Campbell (Ontario, Ohio/Lexington) went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Marietta's offensive attack. Streets had a triple and scored a run.
 
Callista Adorno had three hits for RPI including a double. Addison Shaffer and Lauren Cosselman each had two hits in the game.
 
Marietta is back in action on Sunday (Mar. 8). The Pioneers play Monmouth at 2:30 p.m. and Nebraska Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
